Q

Where can I get water in the event of a disaster?

Last updated on October 18, 2024.

Water supply and sewerage
A

In the event that a water outage occurs due to a disaster such as a large-scale earthquake, anyone can obtain drinking water at the "disaster water station" maintained throughout the city.
In the event of a disaster near you, in addition to the smartphone free application "Location Suma" and "National refuge Guide", the "Disaster Water Supply Map" distributed at ward offices, etc. You can check it.
There is no container to bring back water at the water station during a disaster. In addition to the storage of drinking water, we also ask you to prepare containers for water such as plastic containers and tools to take home such as trolleys.
In addition, when a disaster occurs, emergency water supply activities may be delayed due to collapse of roads or collapse of buildings. For this reason, we ask citizens to stock up on drinking water at least 3 liters per person per day and at least 9 liters for at least 3 days.

Reservoir: 22 locations

This is a relay facility that temporarily stores tap water made at the water purification plant and delivers it to each household.
In the event of a disaster, we can secure the amount of water equivalent to one week of drinking water required by citizens.
When water is cut off, Water Works Bureau staff installs temporary faucets to supply water to citizens and water vehicle. ※It is also used as a place to supply water.
Reservoirs that are ready for water supply will be notified with a "Nobori" marked with a water station in the event of a disaster.
※After filling water in the reservoir, water vehicle will give priority to supplying water to emergency medical facilities.

Underground water tank for disasters: 134 units

For the purpose of emergency water supply immediately after the disaster, there are signs installed in elementary and junior high schools designated as evacuation shelter, parks and Minatomirai districts, and where there are underground water tanks for disasters.
It usually functions as part of the water pipe, but when the water pressure drops due to water leakage of the pipe, the emergency closure valve automatically closes and secures fresh drinking water in the tank.
For about three days after the disaster, a temporary faucet can be installed by the local community's "community support" to pump water and supply water with a manual pump.
In addition, Yokohama-shi plumbing cooperative assists establishment.
In order to respond smoothly in the event of a disaster, we regularly conduct emergency water supply training in cooperation with local residents.

Emergency hydrant: 358 locations

This facility uses temporary faucets to water pipes that are resistant to earthquakes, and is installed mainly in elementary and junior high schools designated as evacuation shelter.
About 4 days after the disaster, Water Works Bureau officials will install temporary faucets in line with the Yokohama Pipe Works Cooperative, taking into account the water outage situation.
Emergency hydrants that are ready for water supply will be notified with a "Nobori" marked with a water station in the event of a disaster.

Seismic hydrants: 48 locations (as of the end of FY2023)

It is installed in evacuation shelter, where emergency water supply facilities such as underground water tanks for disasters are not installed.
After the disaster, citizens can secure drinking water from outdoor drinking fountains (seismic hydrants) as usual without performing any special work.
A "signboard" is installed in places where the earthquake-resistant hydrant is located.
