Unfortunately, due to the influence of COVID-19 this year, we have decided not to hold the Yokohama Port Opening Memorial Ceremony, which has a history and tradition, but here are some positive comments from everyone who is working hard even during the COVID-19 pandemic.

I'm Fumiko Hayashi, Mayor of Yokohama. June 2 is the anniversary of the opening of Yokohama Port.
The Yokohama Port Opening Commemorative Event has been an annual commemorative event since 1909 (Meiji 42), when the fifty-year festival was held.
In some cases, it was temporarily suspended during the war, but it has been held grandly every year since 1950 (Showa 25).
Unfortunately, due to the influence of COVID-19, we postponed the Yokohama Port Opening Memorial Ceremony, which has a history and tradition.
We will not be able to celebrate with you, but we would like to celebrate the opening of the port by thinking about the history of Yokohama so far.

Together with the citizens, the declaration of a state of emergency was lifted.
Yokohama City will continue to work hard to combat infectious diseases and restore economic activity as soon as possible, and will do its utmost to restore the bustle and vitality of the city of Yokohama.

Yokohama opened on June 2, 1859 (Ansei 6) and celebrated its 161th anniversary today.
Unfortunately, the opening ceremony has been canceled, but I would be grateful if you could feel in your heart that today is the opening anniversary.

Currently, due to the spread of COVID-19 infection, we are facing major challenges such as efforts for a new lifestyle and economic recovery, but we have overcome many difficulties.
I believe that this difficult situation can be overcome together by bringing together the power of citizens.
And I believe that next year the opening ceremony will be held to celebrate the opening of Yokohama with everyone.
Yokohama City and Yokohama City Council will do their utmost to ensure the safety and security of everyone.
