1 Joint groove
Water pipes and gas pipes are buried on roads, and lines such as electricity and telephones are hung on telephone poles.
Tunnels made to house these pipes and lines together under the road are called "communal gutters", and are maintained in Minato Mirai 21 and Kohoku New Town.

2 Electric wire joint ditch (For maintenance examples, see the section on maintenance examples of electric wire joint ditch.)
The communal ditch also houses water pipes and gas pipes, but facilities buried to accommodate only electric wires such as electricity and telephones are called "electric wire joint ditch".
This facility is mainly composed of pipes that contain electric wires and concrete boxes for use in maintenance of electric wires.

3 Effects of joint ditch and electric wire joint ditch
・The communal ditch can allow people to enter and inspect and repair pipes and lines, so they can work without digging the road and reduce the impact of road construction on traffic.
・The undergrounding of electric wires reduces obstacles on the road, ensuring a safe and comfortable walking space, and improving the landscape of the town.
・The danger of collapse of telephone poles and disconnection during an earthquake is reduced, and the stable supply of electricity and communication can be ensured, improving the disaster prevention of the city.
