Beginning of sewerage

Last updated on July 25, 2024.

With the opening of Yokohama in 1859 (1859), the aspect of Yokohama, which was only a small fishing village, changed completely. Starting with the construction of wharfs and the maintenance of settlements, town development as an open port has begun.

Yokohama brought various technologies and artifacts that can be said to be the cutting edge of the time because of its nature as a contact point with foreign countries. Even today, you can still see those features in various parts of the city.

The origin of modern sewerage in Yokohama began with the development of foreign settlements.
