About facilities

Preservation and Research Center, City of Yokohama was established on April 24, 1999 on the premises of the Yokohama Zoo (outside site) (ZOORASIA). The site area is 3.7ha, and it is located in the "breeding zone" about 1.5 km back from the entrance of the Yokohama Zoo. On the premises, there is an animal house that breeds rare wildlife, a research building that conducts various research on wildlife, and a veterinary clinic for treating animals at the Yokohama Zoo.

This center is a facility designed for the purpose of researching and researching the breeding and breeding of rare wildlife and the preservation of species, and is not usually open to the public.
This is the first attempt in the country that such a facility was built for a zoo.

About protection

Photographs of breeding facilities in Tapir

In the Preservation and Research Center breeding building, we aim to breed carefully selected animals and keep them in succession in order to preserve endangered wildlife. Currently, we are engaged in breeding and breeding of rare wildlife such as Malayan Tapir, Bali Myna, Kagu, Walldrapp Ibis and Congo Peacock, and conduct basic research to elucidate the ecology of wildlife.

In addition, in cooperation with the country of origin of Indonesia, we have also conducted a project to return to the wild in Bali Myna.
As a member of the Japanese Association of Zoos and Aquariums Biodiversity Committee, we conduct surveys on domestic breeding of Walldrapp Ibis, Bali Myna and Tapir (Malayan Tapir, South American Tapir and Baird's Tapir), as well as the preparation of Studbook and planning breeding plans.

As a research facility

At Preservation and Research Center's research facility, we conduct research on animal subspecies judgment, male and female classification, genetic analysis to examine the relationship between species and individuals, quantification of sexual hormones related to breeding, and behavioral analysis related to it.
In addition, 100 and 200 years from now, we have begun frozen storage of endangered animals such as gamete, genes and somatic cells.

In addition to conducting its own research, Preservation and Research Center also supports research activities at three zoos in Yokohama (Nogeyama Zoo, Kanazawa Zoo and Yokohama Zoo).
Our research activities include not only staff from Preservation and Research Center but also staff from zoos and university teachers and students who are conducting joint research.
