Promotion of reading activities

Last updated on March 25, 2025.

Guidelines

"Ordinance about promotion of reading activity of Yokohama citizen" was established in June, 2013 and came into effect in April, 2014. Along with this, "Yokohama citizen book-reading activity promotion plan" was devised to arrange environment to support citizen's reading activity widely from child to adult and to promote reading activity. .
Based on this plan, the Asahi Ward established the Asahi Ward Reading Activity Promotion Goals based on "know," "friendly," and "connect" to promote reading activities in cooperation with ward offices, libraries and schools. The current plan is working on further promotion of reading activities as the second plan.

There is an "apple shelf" in Asahi Ward!

The Asahi Library and Asahi Ward Regional Promotion Division collaborated to set up apple shelves at the Asahi Library and 10 facilities in Asahi Ward.
It is the first attempt to install an "apple shelf" at the same time at many citizen-use facilities!

What is an Apple shelf?

As one of the library services for children with special needs, we started at a library in Sweden and are expanding in Japan.
Apple shelves have a variety of easy-to-use materials, such as Braille books, touching picture books, and easy-to-understand books (LL books).
By combining these materials in one place, we can help children find the right material for them.
