Tsurumi Ward currently has a population of about 296,000, and the area around Tsurumi Station is positioned as one of Yokohama's subcenters. Currently, urban redevelopment projects are underway to become a city with functions suitable for subcenters.
Along the Tsurumi River, which flows through the ward, the use of industrial land to residential areas has been promoted as a “river town”, and it has become a lively town where small and medium-sized factories, commercial areas, and residential areas are mixed. It is also an international region where many foreigners live. In the coastal area of the sea, the Yokohama Science Frontier, a major international research base, is being developed in the Suehirocho area. In the hills “hill town” where residential areas are connected, town development utilizing nature and history is progressing.
In Tsurumi fire department, one office and nine fire departments (Sueyoshi, Daikokucho, Irifune, Yako, Terao, Kishiya, Namamugi, Komaoka and Tsurumisuijyou) protect these areas around the clock.
