A place to enjoy Showa Modern and the changing seasons-The charm of Matano Bettei Garden

Emi Kuribayashi, director of Matano Bettei Garden

The Matano Bettei Garden located in Higashimatano-cho, Totsuka-ku, the border between Yokohama and Fujisawa.
A scenic park formed along the river flow and features a terrain called a river terrace with a difference in height. ※That's right. The area is about 5.9 hectares, one size larger than the Tokyo Dome (about 4.7 hectares), and the entire site is surrounded by large trees, creating a calm space.
The park consists of the inner garden ward centered on Matano Bettei, which is designated as a Yokohama City Certified Historic buildings, and the garden ward where you can enjoy the open lawn square and seasonal flowers.

※A type of city park whose main purpose is to enjoy the natural scenery.

Highlights of the Matano Bettei

Appearance of Matano Bettei

The Matano Bettei was built in 1939 (Showa 14) as the private residence of the 16th head of the Sumitomo family, designed and constructed by architect Hidezo Sato.
It was designated as a national important cultural property in 2004 as a Japanese-Western eclectic house under the influence of the early Showa era Modernism. After that, the designation was canceled due to the burning of the main part, but Yokohama City rebuilt it using the materials that had been preserved based on the materials.
In 2017, it was designated as a Yokohama City-certified Historic buildings in 2017, and has been open to the public since April 2017 as a building of high historical valuemansion.
In rebuilding, although there are some modifications and additions, the structure and finish of the main room faithfully reproduces the original.
The semicircular observation room on the second floor stands out in the exterior. On a clear day, you can see Mount Fuji and the Tanzawa Mountains in the distance. In addition to the exterior and view, the interior is also decorated with various designs such as walls, flooring, doors and lamps, and there are highlights everywhere. In particular, the sliding door of the entrance hall with a beautiful inlay pattern and the lampshade in the living room with an eye-catching design are a must-see.
In the coffee room "Hidamari Garden", you can enjoy tea time while watching the quiet and cozy lawn garden.

The highlights of the garden

In the spring "Four Seasons Flower Garden" and "Lawn Plaza", 13 kinds of cherry blossoms bloom in bloom, starting with the early blooming kawazu-zakura, flower-shaped Kanhizakura like a bell, row of Yoshino cherry tree trees, and green gyoikoko. In "Komichi of Wildflowers", dogtooth violet, Nirinsou and Ebine bloom neatly.
In addition, azaleas from the azalea garden are planted in the fresh greenery, and hydrangeas from the hydrangea garden are planted in the slope ground river terraces during the rainy season.

From summer to autumn, Noritsugi, balloon flower, golden lace, grayheaded cuckoo, etc. add color along the Kitazono Road, and Momijizaka is wrapped in autumn leaves such as maple as autumn deepens.
In winter, you can see Mount Fuji covered with snow, and at the beginning of the year, Japanese narcissus and soshin rowby begin to bloom one after another, giving you a sign of spring.
In the rest building, there is a bulletin board that informs you of the flowering situation, a reading corner for insect specimens, plant picture books, etc., so please use it for a walk. In addition, once a month, an in-park tour “Garden Walk” is held with an exclusive guide to introduce the charm of the garden.

Utilization of conservation in Historic buildings

The coastal area of Sagami Bay has developed from Meiji period as a villa for political and business people and cultural people. Kanagawa Prefecture plans to preserve and utilize existing Historic buildings and gardens to revitalize the region. ※We are promoting it.
Together with those who manage Historic buildings and gardens in the surrounding area, we are participating in the Shonan House Garden cultural festival, a project to promote this concept. In the fall of this year, we will also hold concerts, photography courses, and craft courses to contribute to the appeal of the park and the further utilization of cultural properties in conservation.
The Matano Bettei Garden is in harmony with the elaborate residential architecture that feels the remnants of life at that time, and the lush garden that makes use of the terrain. Please come to the unique special space that is still in urban areas but still has a lot of nature.

※In cooperation with owners, residents of the prefecture, and the government, the conservation will utilize the mansion, gardens and Historic buildings in the coastal area of Sagami Bay as a place to communicate new culture and interact with local residents and visitors.
