Yokohama and Cherry Blossoms
"Yokohama Park No Sakura" owned by Municipal Central Library
At the end of the Edo period, Yoshino cherry tree, created by planters in Somei Village in Edo (now Komagome, Toshima-ku), gained popularity for its rapid growth and the beauty of blooming flowers all at once, and spread throughout Japan since the Meiji era. Was. Yokohama is no exception, and many cherry blossoms were planted and famous places were born in various parts of the city.
Yokohama Park (Naka Ward) is one of the most famous cherry blossom spots in central Yokohama since the Meiji period. The appearance of people wearing kimono sitting on a bench and loving the cherry blossoms in full bloom is also depicted in the colored postcards of the time.
Iseyama, Mt. Noge, and Mt. Kamon, where you can enjoy views of the harbor and city from a small hill along with cherry blossoms, were also popular spots for many people to visit. Yamate Sakuramichi, Sankeien, and the banks of the Horiwari River are also left in many postcards as famous cherry blossom spots. There were nine wild cherry trees in Japan, including wild cherry tree, Oyamazakura, and oshima cherry, but in recent years Kumanozakura has been discovered, and now there are 10 wild species. In addition, it is said that there are more than 200 horticultural varieties of cherry trees made from these wild species. Even if you say cherry blossoms, the color and shape of the flowers vary.

Main varieties found in Yokohama
Yoshino cherry tree (Yoshino cherry tree)
It is a cultivar thought to have been born from the crossing of oshima cherry and Edhigan.
It was made by a gardener in Somei Village in Edo (now Komagome, Toshima-ku) at the end of the Edo period, and spread after the Meiji era. It is a very popular variety that blooms a lot of pale red flowers. It was planted in public places such as parks and streets during post-war reconstruction and high economic growth, and famous cherry blossom spots were born in various places.
Sea turtle
It is a cultivar born from Kanhizakura and Mamezakura.
A small red flower blooms downward. It is not very large at a height of about 3m, so it can be used for potted plants and garden planting. Flowers bloom in early spring earlier than Yoshino cherry tree.
Okanzakura (Okanzakura)
It is a cultivar thought to have originated from Kanhizakura and oshima cherry.
It is also called "Angyo Kanzakura" because it was spread from in Kawaguchi City, Saitama Prefecture. It is a variety planted in parks, mainly in the Kanto region. It will be a large tree with a height of 10m.
oshima cherry (Oshima Sakura)
It is a species distributed in the warm zone in the southern Kanto region, and was named because it is common on Izu-Oshima Island. Various varieties are born based on oshima cherry because they bloom large flowers.
The leaves used for sakura mochi are salted from oshima cherry leaves. It blooms at the same time as Yoshino cherry tree.
Yokohama Hizakura (Yokohama Hizakura)
It is a variety made by Isao Shirai of Yokohama City. It was made by crossing Kanhizakura with a variety called "Kenrokuen Kumagaya". Red-purple flowers have a very strong presence, and flowering is faster or slower than Yoshino cherry tree.
Jindai Akebono (Akebono, Kojiro Akebono)
It blooms at the same time as Yoshino cherry tree, and the flowers are light red and slightly darker. It is said that it is less susceptible to swallow nest disease, so it can be planted instead of Yoshino cherry tree.
Ichiyo (Kazuha)
It is a variety that has spread mainly in the Kanto region since the late Edo period. The petals are round and pale red, but the center becomes white. It is named Kazuha because one of the pistils coming out of the center of the flower becomes like leaves.
Famous cherry blossom spot where you can see a variety of varieties
This park was built on the site of the Negishi Racecourse, Japan's first full-fledged Western-style racecourse. It is one of the most famous cherry blossom spots in Yokohama, and in spring, about 20 species and more than 400 cherry trees are in full bloom on a small hill. In the park of about 19 hectares, there is a vast lawn open space that makes use of natural hills, so you can relax and relax. There are also Historic buildings in the park, such as the Modernized Industrial Heritage Site and the Old First Class Mamisho, which was certified as a Yokohama City Certified Historic buildings, and many other attractions.

Sakura (late March to early April)

The 47th "Yokohama Flower and Green Spring Fair 2025"
