Voting at the Hodogaya Post Office Festival
At the Hodogaya Post Office Festival held in October 2024, we voted for episodes that we would like to publish in "Tekutekugogaya Post Office Notecho". A total of 189 people voted, and the pamphlet contains the episode of "● walked around Hodogaya-juku in the Edo period!"
Here are two episodes that were not published in the pamphlet unfortunately.
Why is "Gontazaka" called "Gontazaka"? ？
"Gontazaka" is known as a difficult spot at the Hakone Ekiden held during the New Year. Gontazaka on the old Tokaido is also a steep and long slope, and has been a difficult place for travelers since the Edo period. There are various theories about the origin of the name of Gontazaka.
- When a traveler asked the old man on the land for the name of the hill, he thought he had heard his name and answered "Gonta".
- What was called "Gonzazaka" from the name of the land developer called "Gonzaemon Fujita" at that time became "Gontazaka" one day.
A grave in the shape of a rice bale, "The Powerful Oden"
In the cemetery behind the temple called Daisenji in Hodogaya Ward, there is an unusual grave in the shape of a rice bale. It is a grave of a woman named "Oden", who was reputed as a worker at a rice shop in Hodogaya-juku. It is reported that Oden lifted three bales of rice bales (about 180 kg) lightly and surprised people around him.
