What a supporter can do
First of all, what you need to know
According to a leaflet issued by the Cabinet Office, there are few cases where people who commit suicide consult with specialists such as psychiatrists, while nearby people, such as family members and workplaces, are signs of suicide. It is said that they often notice. Among them, the following items are listed as "signs of suicide".
(1)Symptoms of depression
(2)Prolonged physical problems with unknown cause
(3)Increase the amount of sake
(4)I can't maintain my safety and health
(5)The burden of work suddenly increases, makes big mistakes, lose jobs
(6)Support is not available at work or at home
(7)Losing what is valuable to the person
(8)Suffer from severe physical illness
(9)Commit suicide
(10)Commit suicide
I sometimes hear the words, "A person who dies or dies actually does not die," but this is wrong. In particular, if a person who satisfies multiple items (1) to (8) pleases death or clearly says "want to die", the risk of suicide is considered to be extremely high.
In such a case, it is important to take the other person's story seriously first and listen seriously. You should refrain from distracting the story easily and superficial encouragement (for example, "I'm okay," or "Don't think of death").
Specific measures
If you actually hint at suicide or are consulted to "want to die", try the following:
- First, convey what you are trying to listen slowly.
- Listen to the feeling of wanting to die and the background.
Ask and accept the pain of death and the problems behind it. - Listen as much as time permits, and in some cases make other time.
Listen slowly to the counselor's complaint. You don't have to forcibly try to speak or encourage yourself. Also, if you are calling or if you can't get enough time, we will take another time or make an appointment for an interview. - Find the necessary support
Make sure you don't have to think about dying. Ask if you can get help from your family or acquaintances, and provide information if there are effective social resources for those in need. In many cases, consultants do not know information and systems that supporters know and take for granted. In particular, if you suspect mental illness, such as depression, or if you suspect that the risk of suicide is high, you should consult a neurology department or Psychiatry or consult a consultation agency such as a ward office or mental health consultation center.
Keep in mind as a supporter
People who think about suicide often have multiple problems that cannot be solved by themselves. Also, if you actually try to commit suicide and end it, it is often more difficult to live due to the prejudice of the people around you. When thinking about suicide prevention, a long-term and complex perspective is required. For the time being, even if the counselor in front of you stops suicide at any time, you must prevent you from wanting to die or attempting suicide.
To do so, it is necessary to consider with the counselor what kind of support you need from a long-term perspective and ask for the cooperation of people (such as family members) who will become key persons as much as possible. In addition, it is important to build a network that supports consultants so that supporters do not become isolated.
