Herpangina

Last updated on April 2, 2025.

What is Helphingina?

It is a so-called summer cold infectious disease that spreads mainly in infants under the age of 5 from spring to summer.
It is characterized by blisters appearing in the mouth.
In children, be careful not to dehydrate, as pain in the mouth may not remove water.

Main symptoms

  • Fever
  • Sore throat
  • Painful blisters (in the mouth)

Period until symptoms appear

About 2 to 4 days after infection, fever and sore throat appear.

Route of infection

  • It is transmitted by inhaling splashes contained in sneezing or coughing containing the virus (flying infection).
  • It is transmitted by touching the mouth and eyes with a hand with the virus (contact infection).
  • It is transmitted when the virus excreted with the stool enters the mouth (feces and mouth infection).

Points of infection control

Frequent hand washing

  • After going out, wash your hands with running water and soap.
  • After washing your hands, rinse thoroughly with water and wipe your fingers with a clean towel or paper towel.
  • Even after the symptoms have subsided, the virus is excreted along with the stool for about 2 to 4 weeks.
Thoroughly wash your hands after the toilet or after changing diapers.

Specifically, please see method of hand washing (PDF: 316KB).

Cough etiquette

  • When coughing or sneezing, cover your nose and mouth with a mask or tissue.
  • Wash your hands immediately if you have runny nose or sputum on your palms.

Notes on Life

  • Avoid sharing dishes and towels with infected people.
  • Bathing for infected people should be done last in their family or only shower.
