Effective use of space in tubes (optical fiber)

Sewage pipes are widely spread throughout the city and are said to be relatively strong against earthquakes. Therefore, the construction of optical fiber networks using space in sewer pipes is attracting attention. This is because it was possible to install anything in the sewer pipe until now, due to the revision of the Sewerage Law in June 1996.

In Yokohama City, the space inside the sewer pipe plays an important role as a valuable information infrastructure in the city, so from April 1, 1999, first-class electric communication companies etc. It is now possible to occupy optical fibers.

Currently, Yokohama City uses NTT's dedicated line to monitor and control the pumping station from the water reclamation center, but in line with the update of the remote monitoring control device, an optical fiber communication network is being developed in the sewer pipe.

This fiber optic communication network aims to improve the reliability of remote monitoring and control by transmitting high-quality information such as voice and images, and speeding up transmission speed, in addition to transmitting signals such as signals for checking operating conditions and signals for operating facilities from afar.

In addition, we will use an optical fiber communication network to network sewerage equipment, build a comprehensive information system, and ensure stable operation and efficiency of the sewerage business.

Networking pumping stations (24 operating locations, 3 planned locations), water reclamation centers (11 locations), sludge recycling centers (2 locations), central information centers (future plans), etc. (total length of 132km).

At the end of FY2008, the extension of the optical fiber in the sewer pipe was 97 km.
