The water source forest has the function of absorbing plenty of rainwater, purifying it into high-quality groundwater, adjusting floods, and preventing sediment runoff and drought (water source recharge function).
Michishi Village, Minamitsuru-gun, Yamanashi Prefecture, where the Doshi River flows, the water source of Yokohama City. In a village that crosses the Tanzawa Massif to the north, there is a vast water source forest owned by City of Yokohama, Water Works Bureau. Michishi Village has a lot of rainfall and is blessed with abundant forests, and the water quality of the Doshi River raised there is extremely good.
For more than 100 years since Yokohama City purchased a forest from Yamanashi Prefecture in 1916, the Doshi Water Source Forest has played an important role in stably sending water from the Doshi River, which was praised as "it will not rot even if it crosses the equator."
The area of the watershed forest owned by Yokohama City is 2,873 ha, which is about 36% of the total area of Michishi Village of 7,968 hectares.
There are 762 ha of artificial forests centered on cypress, 1,799 ha of coniferous natural forest such as broadleaf tree such as beech and fir tsuga, and 312 ha of grasslands and swamps.
The plantation forest, which accounts for about 27% of the Doshi Water Source Forests, is managed to protect and nurture forests, such as cutting undergrowth and thinning, to create a mixed coniferous tree and broadleaf tree.
