Hen history / origin
A town newly established from a part of Shimoyamotocho-cho with the enforcement of the land readjustment project in 1968. In the old days, it was Shitaya Honmura, Tsuzuki-gun. When the municipal system was enacted in 1889, it merged with Teraya Village, Kamoshida Village, Nariai Village, Kamiya Honmura, Tetsumura, Kurosuda Village, Oba Village, Ichigao Village, Kita hassaku Village, Nishi hassaku Village, Oyama Village, Aoto Village and Shimo-Asao Village to become Shitaya in Naka-Satomura. Transferred from Midori Ward following the reorganization of administrative districts in 1994. The town name was named as one of the town names derived from the plant name.
