Katabira River

Last updated on December 10, 2021.

Katabira River originates in Wakabadai, Asahi Ward. Combine tributaries such as Naka Horikawa and Ima Igawa and flow along the Sotetsu Line. They are divided into the Ishizaki River, the Aratama River and the faction Aratama River near Yokohama-sta.-nishiguchi and poured into Yokohama Port. In 1958, Typhoon No. 22 (Kano River Typhoon) brought great disaster to the basin. This led to the start of full-scale river renovation work. The business section of Yokohama City is 6.17 km upstream from the junction of Naka-Horikawa.
Currently, Katabira River is carrying out river renovations to cope with rainfall with an over-year probability of 1/6.3, and has completed renovations around Shimokawai Town. In addition, we made effective use of the riverbed space (from the confluence of Naka-Horikawa to Tsurumai Bridge, 600m in length) to create a Shinsui-Koen Park that utilizes terrain, nature, and water flow. Construction was started in 1983 and completed in 1988. This water park has been maintained as part of the "Promenade Project of Water, Greenery and History" so that citizens can get close to the waterside.
