Social experiments on promotion of water transportation and river utilization
Last updated on March 14, 2025.
Around the lower Ooka River basin
The estuary of the Ooka River water system, which runs through central Yokohama, is the center of Yokohama, with offices, commercial areas, sightseeing spots, and residential areas such as Kannai and Kangai-District and Minato Mirai 21 districts.
You can enjoy the beautiful scenery unique to the port town from the water, and after opening the port, it has been used as a canal for transporting building materials and food until the end of the war.
In addition to cruise ships and houseboats, in recent years, more and more people are enjoying water activities such as SUP, kayaking, and E-boat.
The Urban Revitalization Division uses the piers and hydrophilic facilities maintained in the Ookagawa River to conduct social experiments and other activities with the aim of strengthening migration and creating bustle utilizing the attractiveness of rivers and the Uchiko area. .

Takenawa Aki! Yokohama Cruise 2019
Every year from September to November, many large-scale events are held in the city center of Yokohama that can attract many visitors.
The biggest attraction of water transportation in central Yokohama is that you can enjoy the view of Yokohama from the water, but in addition to this, it is expected that many visitors will be crowded, especially at the time of the event, so it may be attractive as a new means of transportation to event venues away from public transportation such as railway stations.
Therefore, during the autumn season, a cruise connecting water transportation bases located in the Ookagawa and Uchiko districts was conducted, and by promoting this, the appeal of water transportation in central Yokohama and the event was held at the Yokohama coastal area. We conducted a social experiment to verify the business feasibility of cruises.
