Basic knowledge of HIV/AIDS

What is HIV/AIDS?

HIV is Human Immunodeficiency Virus (human immunodeficiency virus).
AIDS is a disease caused by infection with HIV, but it does not mean "HIV = AIDS".
Infection with HIV reduces the function of immunity, makes it more susceptible to pathogens that are not normally transmitted, and develops various diseases.
The condition of this disease is called AIDS (AIDS: Acquired Immuno-Deficiency Syndrome, Acquired Immuno-Deficiency Syndrome).
There are 23 typical diseases, and when they develop them, they are diagnosed with AIDS. Currently, a variety of treatments are available, and it is becoming possible to prevent the onset of AIDS by taking them properly.
Influenza-like symptoms may appear within a few weeks of HIV infection, but since the period without symptoms lasts about 5 to 10 years, there is a risk of spreading the infection without realizing it.

Route of transmission of HIV

The main routes of transmission are:
①Infection by sexual activity
②Infection through blood
③It is a mother-to-child transmission from mother to baby.
HIV is weak infectivity and is not transmitted other than sexual activity in daily life.

If you are worried about being infected with HIV…

HIV infection has no characteristic symptoms and may not appear, so it is important to have a test to find out if you have been infected.
In Yokohama City, we conduct free and anonymous HIV / syphilis tests.
For more information about testing, please see About Testing.
