Location and terrain of Konan Ward

Konan Ward was formed on October 1, 1969, by reorganizing administrative districts, divided from Minami Ward.
Located in the southern part of Yokohama, it covers an area of 19.86 square kilometers (about 4.6 percent of Yokohama's area), 5.1 kilometers east-west, 6.6 kilometers north-south, Isogo Ward to the east, Totsuka Ward to the west, Sakae Ward to the south, and Minami Ward to the north.
The topography of the Konan Ward consists of the valleys and plateaus upstream of the Ookagawa River and the Hirato Nagatani River, a tributary of the Kashio River. And there is a national border road that separates the former Musashi country and Sagami country so that it runs north and south through the ward. This road has played an important role since ancient times as a road leading to Kamakura. This border road is also a watershed, and the Hinokawa and Ooka rivers on the east side flow to Tokyo Bay, and the Hirato Nagatanikawa on the west side flows to Sagami Bay.
Until the Edo period, Yokohama itself was only a cold village, and the current Konan Ward area was a peaceful rural area surrounded by lush hills that lived only around the main roads. With the opening of Yokohama Port, development gradually progressed as a hinterland for Yokohama Port, and industry was booming. In particular, the printing industry is famous as a local industry in Konan Ward because it uses the water flow of the Ookagawa River. In addition, the cultivation of vegetables and flowers (oysters) to be supplied to urban areas was also actively performed. Since then, large-scale residential land development has progressed as a bedroom town, and it has undergone a major transformation from a rural city to a residential city.
The Keihinkyuko Line, JR Negishi Line, and Municipal Subways pass through the city. In particular, the Kamiooka and Konandai districts are crowded with commercial facilities, making it a convenient and comfortable ward.
