Last updated on April 7, 2023.

All persons with Address in Japan who are between the ages of 20 and 60 who are not the second and third insured persons are eligible for the first insured persons.
In the following cases, it is necessary to notify the ward office National Pension Plan Section, etc.

Those who are 20 years old will receive a "Notice of joining the National Pension Plan (Kokumin Nenkin)" and "Notice of Basic Pension Number" from the pension Japan Organization within approximately two weeks of their birthday. Please keep the basic pension number notice in a safe place aspension is required. (It will not be sent to those who have joined pension, such as workplaces, or those who have received disability or survivors' pensions.) For details, please refer to National Pension Plan (Kokumin Nenkin)'s procedures (outside site) when you reach the age of 20.

If you become a Employee Pension Plan (Kosei Nenkin) member due to employment and are no longer eligible for the first insured person, you will not need to notify the ward office because it will be automatically reflected in your National Pension Plan (Kokumin Nenkin) qualification if you have made the payment of National Pension Plan (Kokumin Nenkin) insurance premiums by direct debit, please contact the pension office in charge of your ward.)

There is no need to pay National Pension Plan (Kokumin Nenkin) premiums after the month in which they no longer qualify as the first insured due to employment. If you have overpaid insurance premiums, you will receive a notification from the Japan pension Organization. Follow the notice and have you return (refund) the overpaid premium.

If the first insured person is transferred to Address, the insured person whose My Number and Basic Pension Number are linked, in principle, notification of changes to Address is not required. However, procedures may be required for moving from overseas or moving overseas. For details, please contact the ward office National Pension Plan Section.
