conservation, a row of cherry blossom trees in the Kashio River
In the ward, there are spots where you can enjoy many cherry blossoms, including the Kashio River, and it is full of many people when the cherry blossoms bloom. Among them, the cherry blossoms on the Kashio River have a long history, and it is said that they were planted in 1856 during the Edo period. Although they were all cut down during the arable land in the late Meiji era and World War II, each time they planted trees with the local community to protect the row of cherry trees in the Kashio River. However, in the row of cherry trees in the Kashio River, the number of cherry trees that are at risk of lodging due to aging and illness is increasing. The pace of decline has been accelerating in recent years because they have to be cut down. Therefore, with the aim of stopping the decline of the row of cherry trees along the Kashio River, maintaining the current landscape while maintaining a healthy growth environment, and taking over to the future, we have formulated the Totsuka Ward Kashio River Cherry Blossom Tree conservation Regenerationconservation Plan.

conservation, a row of cherry trees along the Kashio River in Totsuka Ward
In recent years, the row of cherry blossom trees in the Kashio River has increased the number of cherry trees that may fall down due to aging and illness of cherry blossoms, and it has been forced to cut down to ensure pedestrian safety.
In May 2024, Totsuka Ward established the Kashio River Cherry Blossom Tree conservation Regeneration Plan Review Committee in order to take over the landscape of the Kashio River Cherry Blossom Trees in the future, and exchanged opinions with participants. In March 2025, we formulated the Totsuka Ward Kashio River Cherry Blossom Tree conservation Revitalization Plan.
Based on this plan, we will focus on conservation's revitalization in three years from FY2025 to FY99 toward the 90th anniversary of the Tozuka Ward System in 2029.
In order to pass on the scenery of the row of cherry trees in the Kashio River to the future
Improvement of growth environment
In fiscal 2024, we formulated the Kashio River Cherry Blossom Tree conservation Revitalization Plan in order to pass on the beautiful landscape of the Kashio River cherry trees with a history of more than 150 years. Based on this plan, we will improve the growth environment. Cherry blossoms are trees that prefer sunny places. The current row of Kashio River cherry blossom trees is often planted closely, and the cherry blossoms interfere with each other, making it impossible to secure enough sunshine and adversely affecting growth. Therefore, when planting supplements, we will expand the planting interval so that cherry blossoms do not interfere with each other so that sufficient sunlight can be secured.
Conversion to Jindai Akebono
At present, the cherry blossoms that are planted in the row of cherry trees in the Kashio River are Yoshino cherry tree. Yoshino cherry tree is said to be vulnerable to pests and insects. In order to pass on the scenery of the row of cherry trees in the Kashio River in the future, it is essential to switch to a variety that is resistant to pests and insects. Therefore, we will plant a new variety called Jindai Akebono, which is said to be more resistant to pests than Yoshino cherry tree. In the future, we will continue to shift from a row of cherry trees in Yoshino cherry tree to a row of cherry trees in Jindai Akebono.
So that many people can enjoy it
The Kashio River Cherry Blossom Trees is located just off Totsuka Station on JR and Yokohama Municipal Subway. In Yokohama City, it is the second largest station after Yokohama Station. We will strive to maintain and maintain beautiful row of cherry trees through cleaning the row of cherry trees so that many people who use Totsuka Station can enjoy the row of cherry trees along the Kashio River. Due to the planting location, in places where it is difficult to plant Jindai Akebono, which grows large, we will plant relatively small varieties of cherry blossoms to form a row of cherry blossom trees where more varieties can be enjoyed.
