Flower of the city "Sakura"

In commemoration of the 60th anniversary of the constituency system, the cherry blossoms were selected as a result of recruiting “flower trees in the ward that left an impression” to the residents of the ward to decide “flowers in the Totsuka Ward”. Among them, there were many people who called "Sakura of the Kashio River". The most common is Yoshino cherry tree, but the first cherry tree that tells the Kashio River spring is Okamezakura. It can be found on both banks between Totsuka Station and Takashimabashi Bridge downstream. You can see a variety of other cherry blossoms.

Kashio River and History

The Kashio River and its tributaries

The Kashio River is a second-class river with a length of about 11 km from the confluence of the Akuwa River and Hirato Nagatanikawa in Kashiwao-cho, Totsuka-ku to the confluence of the Sakaigawa River in Fujisawa City. The basin area is about 84 km2, the second largest in Yokohama city.
This river was often flooded, as it used to be called a rampage river. A full-scale river improvement was carried out as a flood control measure since 1980, and maintenance has been underway to cope with the rainfall of 50 mm per hour in the basin.
In addition, the section from Kashiwao Bridge, which is adjacent to Bridgestone on the upstream side, to Sakae Ward Iijima Bridge, is equipped with a promenade, a lush hydrophilic space that utilizes river management passages. There are squares and event stages using dike and high water floors, making it a relaxing space where you can enjoy recreation at the waterside.

A row of cherry trees in the Kashio River in the early Showa period

It is a famous spot for cherry blossoms since the Edo period.
The cherry blossoms on the Kashio River have a long history and can be traced back to the Ansei period. From Taisho to early Showa era, cherry blossom tunnels lined up on both banks from Totsuka Station to Ofuna, making it known as one of the best cherry blossom spots in Kanto. Since then, logging and new tree planting due to war and renovation have been repeated.
Currently, there are about 350 cherry trees in the Kashio River promenade in the ward, many of which are Yoshino cherry tree. In addition, oshima cherry and wild cherry tree have been confirmed.
Many of the existing cherry blossoms were planted during the Showa era, and there is concern that the tree vigor will decline, fallen trees, broken branches, etc. due to aging and disease damage. In order to pass on the Kashio River Cherry Blossom Trees, a typical landscape of Totsuka Ward, to the future, we will continue to study the restoration of cherry blossoms in conservation.
