1 Profile of Tsurumi Ward

　Tsurumi Ward is located in the northeastern part of the city and was established on October 1, 1927 by the enforcement of the municipal system in Yokohama. There is a theory that the name "Tsurumi" appears in historical materials from the Kamakura period, and it is said that the name was given from the legend that Minamoto no Yoritomo released a crane in this area, but "Tsurumi" refers to waterways and rivers regardless of "Tsurumi" refers to the terrain of the meandering Tsurumi River.
　Tsurumi has been crowded with river lines and highways since the Edo period, due to the water transportation of the Tsurumi River and people traveling on the Tokaido. In the coastal areas where fishing was thriving, landfills have progressed since the Meiji era, and Japan's heavy chemical industry has been supported as the core of the Keihin Industrial Zone. After the war, along with high economic growth, the concentration of commerce and industry and population growth progressed.
　Today, Tsurumi Ward has a population of more than 295,000 and consists of a hill with residential areas, a river town along the Tsurumi River, and a sea town on the seafront.
　"Oka no Machi" has rich nature such as Prefectural Mitsuike Park and Shishigaya Citizen's Forest, where you can enjoy the beautiful scenery of the four seasons. In addition, the Yokomizo mansion in Designated Cultural Property, Yokohama, and the former Sawano family nagayamon (known as the "Baba no Akamon") of Historic buildings certified by Yokohama, are being preserved and utilized to create a town that takes advantage of its history.
　In the “river town” centered on the Tsurumi River, the shift from factories to houses has progressed, and it has become a town where industry, commerce, and housing are mixed. It is also an international area where many foreigners live, and the Tsurumi River is a symbol of the Tsurumi Ward, where many residents enjoy walking.
　In the seaside area, the RIKEN Yokohama Campus, a global research facility for life sciences, and the Yokohama City Industry-Academia Collaborative Research Center, which promotes industry-academia collaboration, have been established in the Suehiro area, and reorganized as the Yokohama Science Frontier.
