Meisetsu Naito, a poet during the Meiji era, was impressed by the villagers' creation of Haiku and saw the married pine in the precincts and wrote, "Husbands are husbands, women are women, and pine is cool."
The stumps of the couple pine are enshrined in the next shrine.
