The 6th Asia Smart City Conference

In fiscal 2017, the 6th Asia Smart City Conference was held as a place for the mayors of Asian cities and experts from international organizations to come together and share knowledge for the realization of a sustainable city. In this fiscal year, at the subcommittee, participants will present their urban development initiatives and programs of support organizations, conduct specialized discussions according to each theme, and then bring the discussions of each subcommittee to hold a general meeting. I did it. These contents were compiled as the 6th Asia Smart City Conference Declaration (Yokohama Declaration) and introduced at COP23 held in Bonn, Germany.

◆Visit to Yokohama City Infrastructure (Day 1)

We visited Hokubu Sewerage Center (Tsurumi-ku, Yokohama) and Kohoku New Town (Tsuzuki-ku, Yokohama).

◆Yokohama Youth Event 2017 (Day 2)

This seminar was held as a follow-up project for the Next Generation Development Seminar held at the 50th Annual Meeting of the Asian Development Bank (ADB) in May 2017. Students from Yokohama National University and Yokohama City University had lively discussions with overseas experts and ADB economists on specialized topics such as smart city development in Asia and infrastructure business for Japanese companies in Asia.

◆“Smart Urban Development Conference” co-hosted by the World Bank and the Asian Development Bank (Day 2)

Experts from Japan and abroad and representatives from overseas cities were invited to discuss solutions and practical data utilization know-how for more efficient and effective urban development in developed and developing countries with experts in urban development at the World Bank.

◆The 6th Asia Smart City Conference Subcommittee (Day 3)

Based on the four subcommittee themes, presentations and discussions were made by representatives of each city and organization.

Subcommittee 1: Waste and sludge treatment in smart cities
Subcommittee 2: Approaches toward the realization of energy-saving and low-carbon cities
Subcommittee 3: Utilization of ICT and Big Data
Subcommittee 4: Experience in Japan

◆Business Matching (Day 3)
At the lunch venue, business matching with participants from the Asia Smart City Conference was held through exhibitions by companies in Yokohama City.

Following the opening remarks by Mayor Yokohama, Parliamentary Vice-Minister for Foreign Affairs Horii, Minister for Global Environment, Ministry of the Environment, and Deputy Secretary-General Kono gave keynote speeches. In the two round table sessions, with the lead of Vindu Rohani, former Vice President of the Asian Development Bank, the overall moderator, invited discussions from each subcommittee and shared the technologies, knowledge, and urban issues of each organization from international organizations, private companies, and speakers from Asian cities.
At the closing session, President IGES Takeuchi gave a speech, and students gave a speech based on discussions at the Yokohama Youth Event 2017 held the day before.
The contents discussed at the 6th Asia Smart City Conference were compiled as the 6th Asia Smart City Conference Declaration (Yokohama Declaration), and Mayor Hayashi and Mayor Osmenia Cebu announced and adopted by participants.
