In 2024, container cargo volume increased 6.4% year-on-year to 45.98 million tons, and volume handled increased 1.8% to 3.08 million units. The number of products handled exceeded 3 million for the second consecutive year, exceeding the previous year for the fourth consecutive year, and the highest number in the last 10 years.
In particular, the number of foreign trade containers handled increased by 2.6% year-on-year, and the main factor is that foreign trade transit (*) containers transshiped at Yokohama Port increased significantly to 250,000 units, up 66.4% year-on-year. By country, the handling of transit containers from China to Mexico and Canada is increasing.
Various initiatives as international container strategic ports are contributing to the increase in foreign container cargo.
※Transition: In the sense of "transship", the ship carrying cargo does not call directly to the destination, so transshipment to a ship calling at the destination at the port on the way.
