Kitamukai Jizo

Last updated on February 16, 2024.

From National Route 1 to Yokohama Seifu High School (former Meirin High School), there is "Kitamuki Jizo" next to the intersection that has climbed a long and steep slope (Iwanazaka). This road that Jizo watches over has been used by many people since ancient times as the "Kanazawa Kamakura Road".
The following story is told as a way that this Jizo was built in 1717 (1717).
In this neighborhood, a lost monk was at a loss, and a nearby temple head priest appeared and stayed at the temple. head priest said in his dream, "There are monks who are lost and are in trouble, so go to salvation." It is said that the monk who learned that donated his belongings and built Jizo facing the north (Edo) with his appreciation for Jizo and wishing for the safety of his trip.
After that, even if the direction of Jizo was changed at the time of repair, it was suddenly returned to the north, so it came to be called "Kitamu Jizo".
This is the junction of Kanazawa Kamakura Road, and Jizo's square column is engraved with "Kanasawa Road on the left side" and "Kumeru Temple Road on the right side", which also served as directions to Kanazawa and Komyoji.
It was registered as a cultural property of Yokohama City in December 1989.
