September issue Fall is a disaster prevention seasonal earthquake and fire experience tour report

In Yokohama Disaster Risk Reduction Learning Center, visitors can learn about disaster prevention and reduce disaster damage in an easy-to-understand manner through storm and flood damage tours and earthquakes and fire tours. This time, I went to the "Earthquake and Fire Experience Tour"!

Last updated on January 19, 2024.

Disaster theater

First of all, I learned about disaster prevention through video at the Disaster Theater.
This time, we watched a video that was easy to understand with a comedy touch called "Guragakuru" and learned the importance of "self support community support".
The video was a fun atmosphere, but the importance of preparing for disasters and the need for "self support community support" were carefully introduced to raise awareness of disaster prevention.
In addition, there are several videos, such as animations that are easy to understand for kindergarten children and other children, and those that have a slightly scary taste for adults, so you can choose the content that meets the wishes of the participants .

Earthquake simulator

Next, we had an earthquake experience with the "earthquake simulator".
You can experience a variety of situations, including seismic intensity 3 to 7, past earthquakes such as the Great East Japan Earthquake and the Great Hanshin-Awaji Earthquake, and detached houses and skyscrapers.
It's a simulator experience, so I know that the shaking will come in advance, but I still barely stood. In fact, I was able to recognize again the horror of this shaking suddenly.
In addition, depending on the selected situation, such as indoors or outdoors, a reproduction video of what falls and falls is projected on the screen.
It may not always be the same in the event of an actual earthquake, but it can be used as a reference for preparation.

Fire simulator

Next, I experienced a "fire simulator" consisting of two experiences, "fire extinguishing experience" and "smoke experience".

In the fire extinguishing experience, you can experience simulated firefighting activities using fire extinguisher. To the fire displayed on the monitor, use the dedicated fire extinguisher and hit it well to extinguish the fire. You can enjoy learning how to use fire extinguisher and how to extinguish the fire like a game.
By the way, the general fire extinguisher has a range of about 3 to 5 meters and emits out the fire extinguisher in about 10 to 15 seconds, so it is better to approach a certain degree and then apply it to the burning object instead of the flame. Also, if the flame has reached the ceiling, do not overdo it and evacuate.

In the "Smoke Experience", you can experience evacuation behavior from smoke in a passage filled with smoke that does not harm your body.
Although it was an experience, evacuation was sufficiently difficult in poor visibility, but the actual fire seems to be even more severe, such as heat, black smoke, and harmful substances.
People tend to think that fire is scary, but don't forget the fear of smoke.

reduce disaster damage Training Room

Finally, in the reduce disaster damage Training Room, we had a simulated experience from earthquake occurrence to evacuation as a summary of our experiences so far.
First, in the event of an earthquake, evacuate under a desk or the like. It is a basic method, but there are many people who actually saved it.
As the shaking had subsided, when a helmet or emergency carry-out bag was equipped to prepare for evacuation outdoors, a towel fell on the stove and a fire broke out. Don't panic, use fire extinguisher to extinguish the fire. What I learned in the fire extinguishing experience was utilized here.
Before evacuating outdoors, turn off the stove and drop off the breaker to prevent fire.
Since the circumstances differ from home to home, the response in the event of an earthquake will also differ from person to person, but it was a good opportunity to think about what to do in my own home.

At Yokohama Disaster Risk Reduction Learning Center's experience menu, including the "Earthquake and Fire Experience Tour," participants will be able to re-recognize the importance of disaster preparedness, and guide staff will teach you specific stories and useful tips based on actual experiences in the event of a disaster.
I don't know when an earthquake will occur, it's no wonder if it happens at this moment. That's why it's important to prepare right now and learn how to protect yourself.
