In photochemical smog, the concentration of photochemical oxidants is high, especially in summer when the temperature is high and sunlight is high. A photochemical smog advisory is issued every year in the Tokyo metropolitan area, and it is important to reduce the emission of volatile organic compounds (VOCs), a major causative substance. In addition, the reduction of VOC emissions is considered to be effective in reducing microparticulate matter (PM2.5).
Nine prefectures (Saitama, Chiba, Tokyo, Kanagawa, Yokohama, Kawasaki, Chiba, Saitama, and Sagamihara) set June to September as a priority period for implementing VOC measures in summer, calling on businesses and residents to reduce VOC emissions and working to improve the photochemical smogphotochemical smog.
From June to September is the priority implementation period for "Summer VOC measures"! (PDF:572KB)
