Preservation and Research Center, City of Yokohama, together with Tokyo's Onshi Ueno Zoo, succeeded in collecting semen from the wild ptarmigan at Mount Norikura from May 25 to 26, 2024.
The collected semen were refrigerated from Mount Norikura to nearby Toyama City Family Park, and then injected into breeding females by the park. Later, on June 28, two chicks were born, and succeeded in artificial reproduction using refrigerated semen of wild males for the first time in Japan.
Since fiscal 2021, Preservation and Research Center, City of Yokohama has been working with Ueno Zoo to develop artificial reproduction technology for Japanese Rock Ptarmigan.
