Director General Column “Leveraging lessons learned from 100 years ago” (September 29, 2023)

　This year marks the 100th anniversary of the Great Kanto Earthquake. As metropolitan area earthquake, which is around 7 in magnitude, is expected to occur with a probability of 70% within 30 years, disaster prevention in the city is attracting attention again.
　How should we make use of the lessons learned 100 years ago?
　self support, which protects oneself, and community support, is very important for family members and neighbors to help each other. At the district round-table conference held in May and June, "disaster prevention" was featured in many districts, and everyone was seriously discussed, and I felt very reliable.
　Various events have been canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and face-to-face disaster drill has been difficult for a long time, but now that it is gradually recovering, why not join the local disaster drill? I hope that you can think and prepare for disaster prevention in the area and at home while creating a face-to-face relationship.
　The staff of the ward office also conducts training in preparation for the coming earthquake. We will continue to work with you to create a safe and secure town that is resistant to disasters.
