Soutetsu Line was called the Shinchu Railway and carried gravel from the Sagami River. It opened to Nishi-Yokohama Station in 1929, and four years later to Yokohama Station.
I first got on the Soutetsu Line during the food shortage immediately after the end of the war. I went to Ebina for shopping with my mother. At that time, there were 1 or 2 trains, and the platform at Nishi-Yokohama Station was lower than it is now.
In the 1930s, Yokohama-sta.-nishiguchi, which was a material storage area, appeared one after another, including bright department stores, luxurious shopping streets, gorgeous cinemas, Western-style shops full of sense, coffee shops and beer halls popular among young people. The vehicle had a four-car train, and the roof of Yokohama Station was only half of the platform. And now it's an 8 or 10-car train, Yokohama Station is inside the building. Construction is underway to connect to Tokyo from the middle of the line.
