It's new! Nishi Ward Tekuteku Sketch: The 63rd fan-shaped locomotive garage
This is a sketch and text published in the public relations Yokohama Nishi Ward version from June 2013. The content may differ from the current one. Thank you for your understanding.
From the east exit of Yokohama Station, take Route 1 toward the Takashimacho intersection and cross the tsukijibashi Bridge. The port side is the Minato Mirai 21 district, which is lined with new buildings, but it was once a vast Yokohama engine zone.
In 1914 (Daisho 3), it was relocated from the current Sakuragicho Station to this area, and became a base for increasing railway freight transportation. Cargo was carried all over the country from the yard on the premises.
At present, there was a fan-shaped locomotive garage along the road near the schoolyard where Minato Mirai Honmachi Elementary School is built. Before that, there was also a turntable for changing the direction and putting in and out of the locomotive.
When I was in elementary school, when I passed by, I smelled the smoke of a steam locomotive, and smoke was rising from the chimney in the garage. I wanted to go inside and see a lot of steam locomotives.
The Yokohama engine zone was electrified, eventually leading to truck transportation, and the engine zone was abolished at the end of the Showa era. Now, the surrounding area is changing rapidly to a new landscape that can not be believed by people raised in Yokohama.
