Hamamatsucho Park is located near the intersection in front of Nishi-Yokohama Station on the Sagami Railway Line. Under the cherry blossoms in full bloom, children and families are playing well.
Immediately after the end of the war, when I was a child, there were no parks in the town, and I was playing with begoma, menko, nails, cans, and tag on roads where there were few fields and cars. After 1950 (Showa 25), parks have been formed one after another in Otani, Hamamatsucho, Kubocho and Ikenoue.
In a corner of Hamamatsucho Park, there is a monument commemorating the repair of a private road in western Shioda Yokomakura, Nishitobe-cho, completed in May 1923 (Daisho 12) just before the Great Kanto Earthquake. Hamamatsucho used to be called Shiota, and there was Shiota, which made salt in this area.
It is said that the name of Hamamatsucho is derived from the pine that was planted in the old days when Shiota was. Mr. Amakasa, the chairman of the self-government living nearby, said, "My father was Shiota. When I was a child, I often climbed this monument and played." I'll look into Shiota in Nishi Ward.
