It's new! Nishi Ward Tekuteku Sketch: Under the 53rd Old Toyoko Line Overpass
This is a sketch and text published in the public relations Yokohama Nishi Ward version from June 2013. The content may differ from the current one. Thank you for your understanding.
About 1.1 kilometers straight from JR NEGISHI LINE Sakuragi-cho Sta. to the Takashimacho intersection, there are concrete pillars supporting the overpass of the former Toyoko Line. It looks like a wall that protects the new city Minato Mirai district.
At present, the JR Negishi Line and some of the freight lines run by the Australian merchant Kaemon Takashima in the early Meiji era reclaimed the land for railway lines from Nogeura to the Aokicho coast. It is said that it was completed in 135 days of fine weather according to the contract, and it was difficult construction using 3,000 people.
In September 1872, Japan's first railway line was opened from Yokohama Station (now near JR NEGISHI LINE Sakuragi-cho Sta.) to Shimbashi Station. People at that time were surprised to see steam locomotives running with smoke.
It was elevated in 1918 (Daisho 7), and in 1932 (Showa 7), a cargo ship was transferred and the Toyoko Line was opened. The overpass of the former Toyoko Line, which was abolished by the Minato Mirai Line, is now a short promenade from Sakuragicho Station to Momijizaka.
