From the ward office entrance intersection of National Route 1, pass under Hiranuma Ninobashi, cross the Ishizaki River, and cross the railway overpass such as the Sagami Railway Line. In front of the Tokyo Gas Holder, the Furukawa Electric Yokohama Research Institute is located along the Katabira River. In the Edo period, the area around this area was reclaimed by the Nakasu of the river and was called Owari-ya Nitta.
Yochichi Yamada, the inventor of Yokohama, founded the Yokohama Electric Wire Works in anticipation of an increase in demand for electric lights, and in 1902, established a new plant in Nishihiranumacho from Takashimacho. Eventually, in 1920 (Daisho 9), it merged with Furukawa LLC to become Furukawa Electric. Furukawa Electric, along with Yokohama Dock, was a large factory in Nishi Ward. In the past, there was the Sagami Railway Line and Furukawa Electric Railway Station in the vicinity of the railway overpass, which was used by many people working at Furukawa Electric.
Currently, Furukawa Electric's Yokohama Research Institute is conducting technical research and development of new materials. We look forward to a great leap in the latest technology from Nishi Ward.
